Edvard Grieg (1843-1907): Lyrische Stücke: 11. Arietta01:26. With Gilels we are in the presence of a great keyboard master whose characterization and control of color and articulation are wholly remarkable. Engineered by Klaus Scheibe Produced by Günther Breest. Digitally remastered.

43 No. 2. lbum-Leaf, Op. 47 No. elody, Op. 3. orwegian Dance (Hailing), O. A complete four-record set from Adni and now a selection from a Russian giant: how strange that after slender representation in the catalogue, Grieg's Lyric Pieces should have made such a come-back. The sleevenote tells us that though in Russia, as here, this music is usually kept for the schoolroom, Gilels's interest was aroused when he heard a Norwegian folk-tune over the radio and shortly afterwards found it in one of these pieces.

Late Russian pianist Emil Gilels, considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, lovingly recorded these 20 selections from Grieg’s oeuvre of 66 short Lyric Pieces in 1974. The programme opens and closes with Grieg’s first and very last lyric pieces and includes Butterfly, one of Grieg’s best known compositions. Here, surely, is a classic recording, one of calibre and status for all time. Rarely can a great artist have declared his love with such touching candour
