The Groover is an album by organist Jimmy McGriff recorded in 1982 and released on the Jazz America Marketing (JAM) label. The Washington Post's Mike Joyce wrote: "Jazz organist Jimmy McGriff demonstrates on The Groover that no musician has a monopoly on the blues. Certainly not these blues - the late-night, after-hours kind that once routinely spilled from tired jukeboxes at closing time. The Groover lives up to its title and a tradition well worth renewing". Night Train" (Jimmy Forrest) – 6:30.

martes, 16 de abril de 2019. Jimmy McGriff, Where The Action's At! Artist Biography by Steve Huey. One of the all-time giants of the Hammond B-3, Jimmy McGriff sometimes gets lost amid all the great soul-jazz organists from his hometown of Philadelphia. He was almost certainly the bluesiest of the major soul-jazz pioneers, and indeed, he often insisted that he was more of a blues musician than a jazz artist; nonetheless, he remained eclectic enough to blur the lines of classification. Sue issued McGriff's debut album, naturally also titled I've Got a Woman, in 1963; it too was a hit, nearly making the pop Top 20, and it spun off two more charting singles in the McGriff originals "All About My Girl" (number 12 R&B, Top 50 pop) and ".

A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy’s hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy’s other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7″ singles than any of Jimmy’s straighter soul jazz work. This 1971 session finds McGriff continuing to do like so many other jazz musicians of the time: embrace and adapt to the emergence of funk and soul into mainstream music, and recontextualize it in a jazz arena. The results are an unsurprisingly delicious slice of jazz-funk made from the finest ingredients.

The album is widely respected as an early example of the way that jazz was beginning to acknowledge the fledgling funk sound. Published on. December 28, 2018. A classic example of funky urban jazz was new on the US album chart on 28 December 1968 for the great organ player Jimmy McGriff.
