The four volumes of William Basinski's ambient masterpiece have been gathered into a gorgeous and impressive 9xLP, 5xCD box set, including two previously unreleased live performances. The Disintegration Loops arrived with a story that was beautiful and heartbreaking in its own right. It's been repeated so many times that Basinski himself has grown weary of telling it: in the 1980s, he constructed a series of tape loops consisting of processed snatches of music captured from an easy listening station. When going through his archives in 2001, he decided to digitize the decades-old loops to preserve them.

Since beginning to make a conscious effort to explore different kinds of music, I have listened to hundreds of these kinds of albums, but all of them pale in comparison to what William Basinski has crafted here. No album lives and breathes its subject matter quite like The Disintegration Loops, which not only conveys its concept impeccably to the listener, but stands as a perfect aural representation of the inevitability of decay. Many are familiar with the circumstances that gave birth to this masterpiece, but understanding them is absolutely imperative to appreciating what is found here.
In the process of transferring aging reel-to-reel tape loops to a digital medium, Basinski found the reels (originally recorded in 1982) were so old and decrepit that the tape would shed slightly with each pass of the loop. This gradually affected the sound coming through, blurring the short, pastoral phrases of sound into an increasingly ghostly and unintelligible ambient landscape
