Even with the bold title Tales from a Skinny White Boy, his debut album often goes safe and finds the singer becoming a Caribbean crooner with slow grooving backing tracks. During these cuts, his delivery is somewhere between Dennis Brown and Kevin Lyttle but his falsetto sounds just like Justin Timberlake. The blend comes off as more influenced by a cruise ship excursion than of a punky reggae party, but when Kray isn't offering his heart in this faceless manner, his charisma shines through

We could debate Londoner Bobby Kray’s credibility and authenticity till the cows come home, but the question is: is this album any good? On initial listen, the music is incredibly easy to digest; Kray’s high-pitched, Justin Timberlake-styled vocal glides over catchy melodies and rolls effortlessly through gentle drums and chilled bass. Silly Games leaps out as an obvious highlight. That is until the reggae connoisseur sitting to your left informs you it’s a cover of Janet Kay’s 1979 lovers rock classic and the original is far better. Kray also covers well-known reggae anthem Bam Bam, made. Overall, Kray’s debut offering, entirely produced by UK dub master Dennis Bovell, is totally inoffensive; which is possibly the ultimate insult to any self-respecting musician. With a name like that, Bobby Kray should really be a gangsta rapper; in fact the 26-year-old is a white singer-songwriter from London. However, he has managed to hook up with reggae legends Dennis Bovell (who produces) and Eek-A-Mouse (who duets), and with their help he feeds reggae through soul, lover's rock and lover's rap. Imagine That demonstrates what Kray can do with just vocal and piano, while Bam Bam combines helium-high singing and sea-dredging bass
