Among Haydn’s over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most Mozartian of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn’s most successful and inspired works
The Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula (also known as the ‘Chiemsee-Messe’) currently rests in relative obscurity, being performed rarely and hardly touched in the recording studio. And yet Robert King, his choir, soloists and orchestra here demonstrate this to be a work of great beauty and intense power, with a place both in the liturgy and as a showcase for excellent performances. Performer: Carolyn Sampson - soprano Hilary Summers - alto James Gilchrist - tenor Peter Harvey - bass King's Consort Conductor - Robert King. Track List: CD1: Requiem in C minor 'Pro defuncto archiepiscopo.
Haydn: Chiemsee Messe; Mozart: Ave Verum; Regina Coeli. Michael Haydn's Chiemsee-Mass is an important work that deserves a good recording, and in 2004 it got one; it was among the last pieces recorded by the King's Consort for Hyperion before Robert King and that ensemble parted company. When one acquires recordings from another label, one ought to make sure the recordings on that label are worth reissuing, and in this particular case - despite the presence of Banse and the relative rarity of the Haydn work - it wasn't a good call.
