Hector Berlioz's Romeo et Juliette symphony was a compound labor of love for both an actress and Shakespeare. In this survey, we discuss each of its seven movements, the premiere and revisions in response to critical reaction, some notable recordings, Romeos by other composers, and some sources for further information. Berlioz's next exposure to Romeo and Juliet was in 1831, when he saw Vincenzo Bellini's new opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi but was disappointed that it omitted most of the plot and atmosphere of the play.

Munch takes the Boston Symphony Orchestra on an epic journey of proportions only possible in the human heart and mind. A classic reborn in vivid Living Stereo. It was simply a matter of time before Munch’s feverish, go-for-broke 1954 recording of the Symphonie fantastique showed up on RCA’s Living Stereo CD reissue series. The stereo that lives on this recording is primitive to be sure, with noticeable tape hiss and some weird resonances from the timpani, but for character, panache, and sheer abandon the interpretation is hard to beat. Boston Symphony Orchestra Charles Munch, conductor. Recorded in November 14, 15, 1954 (Symphonie Fantastique), April 23, 24, 1961 (Romeo et Juliette) at at Symphony Hall, Boston. Digitally remastered. Booklet for Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique; Love Scene from Romeo & Juliet.
